Chelsfield pub demo proposed for flats, shop and new pub

Plans have been submitted to Bromley Council to demolish The Chelsfield pub in Windsor Drive and replace with a new pub, shop and flats.

Controversial Punch Taverns are the developer who plans to build 10 flats on the site of a characterful 1930s boozer.

There’s no detailed renders which always is a worry. Basic drawings is all there is – and it looks pretty bland and boxy. It’s a prime site just beside Chelsfield station.

According to the proposal: “The development will make the most effective use of brownfield land whilst at the same time ensuring that the amenity of existing and future residents is protected.

According to plans, “The proposal will result in the creation of a new public house, re-providing the use in a modern and high quality setting that will better serve the existing and future community.”

Despite what they state, box new builds are not very popular as sites for pubs.

When it comes to a new shop they state:

“The provision of a new convenience store will help to extend pedestrian traffic to this end of the local parade and expand the range of retail facilities for existing and future residents.”.

You are actually having a laugh!! There are 2 convenience stores on Windsor drive, along with flats above all the shops. This is a small local run pub that is always busy and has great events. Just recently, Halloween party on Friday. It was Packed to the rafters. What on earth are they thinking! We don’t need new flats, plenty of them above Tesco’s in Orpington not to mention the other “new builds” going on along Knockholt way with the old golf course. What a joke and what an eye sore it would be. Please let me know how we can petition against this bolloxs. Thanks.

Was just thinking exactly the same!

We all need to get a petition going everyone who objects to this ridiculous idea needs to sign. We cannot loose this amazing pub & it’s amazing landlady.

A petition won’t work but individually written objections on the council‘s planning website will be considered.

The ref. No to search under is 18/04573. You can send by post to the Planning Dept. Things to raise are that it‘s a neigh on 100 year building in very good condition and the plot is not a Brownfield site as stated. The pedestrian usage does not require extension as it is already heavily used by commuters. A third convenience store is a complete no sense as we already have two. The former Post Office building in Windsor Drive could be converted instead as it stands empty. The Junction is already highly congested at peak travel times and adding more cars right here at the junction is not highly undesirable.
The current public house has a large function room, which is in constant use by many local organisations, such as golf clubs, cricket clubs, allotments and so on. It has been successfully serving this community for many decades.

Comments of that nature will carry weight.
        Good Luck

Yes I agree what a ridiculous idea any news on a petition who are the owners of the building they are the ones to approach. I will definitely be supporting this to NOT go ahead and spread the word

        Hi,

Object on the council website. Go to https://www.bromley.gov.uk/site/
Tap on Planning and type 18/04573. Citing the already existing convenience stores and the fact that they are bulldozing a lovely 1930s building to be replaced by a box providing nothing more than another less attractive public house and 10 flats when there is currently plenty of housing being built on the former Broke Hill Golf Club site in Knockholt may indeed carry some weight – good luck!

Hi, Thought I just posted a reply but it didn’t show so I’m having another go,
Go to the Brimley Council Website, Tao on Planning, type 18/04573 in the box. This will bring you to the planning application where you can post a comment/make an objection. Good Luck!

A beautifully constructed building that’s going to last another 200yrs , with character, and history. Being replaced with bland , cheaply , thrown up, glorified , chip board rabbit hutches. complete with galvanised steel balcony’s. (for cheapness) designed to be built as cheaply and quickly as possible. a real boon to the community. especially if your a punch Tavern share holder.

it would be okay if they would bother to listen to what the people want but typical greed .
We grew up there have known it for 30 odd years it’s a icon .
If I had the money I would step in and buy it , and who would benefit from the housing ,yes the well off

As a resident and local entertainer I played there on Halloween to a beautifully decorated and packed with good natured locals that use and enjoy the pub regularly. I agree that a pub set in amongst flats will just be too restricted in use and will no longer serve it’s community satisfactorily.
The pub is in great condition and in keeping with the area’s architecture.
The extra flats could be built at the old post office and extra shops are not necessary in the parade.

    • Jutta Hayter

Thanks for that Geoff. Exactly! You can object to the demolition, you don‘t have to be a neighbour. Check the details in my earlier comment. I heard the music as I just live around the corner. Great entertainment and wasn‘t the pub decorated in style too!

As a resident of Chelsfield, this is just appalling news to comprehend. How can Bromley Council even consider doing something like this! Oh no wait, Bromley council is as corrupt as every other council in the country and will clearly be taking a huge bung if this goes ahead.
How on earth will the proposed design better serve the community. Do they give a monkeys about the small businesses that already exist in Windsor Drive, like hell they do.
Echoing other peoples comments, the pub is in keeping with the area and is iconic, how can you just wipe out all of that history for some poncey flats. Shame on you Bromley council for even entertaining the idea.
Object to this like mad people…

    • Bromleylife

Bromley council are not behind it. It’s a private scheme submitted to them for consideration like any other.

      • Jutta Hayter

Yes, Bromley council have received an application and it cannot dismiss any application out of hand. Everyone is entitled to make an application and there are the proper channels for objection. It is right and proper that they are considering it because it’s their duty. To say they are corrupt could be deemed slanderous so be careful about those kind of statements. Bromley Council need to provide a service for the community and in the great scheme of things they are doing a far better job than some I could list. So, let’s keep our hair on and use the proper vehicles and arguments for our objections to the planned build.
